Marina discovered her husband Andrej’s infidelity completely by accident. She had only picked up his phone to charge it because he’d left it on the couch again, when a message popped up from a girl named Lera.
“What dress should I wear tomorrow?” it read, accompanied by several photos.Andrej replied almost instantly: “The red one. You look absolutely stunning in it.”Marina stared at the screen for a few moments. Then, she calmly locked the phone and placed it on the table.
Without saying a word, she walked to the kitchen and stood by the window, gazing out at the evening courtyard. She didn’t confront Andrej—not out of fear, but because she wanted to understand everything first. Maybe she had misread the situation.
Perhaps Lera was just a colleague, and the dresses were for some work competition… But the more she thought about the past months, the less she believed that explanation.Andrej had long stopped noticing her.
He came home, ate dinner, scrolled on his phone, and barely acknowledged her words. Yet in his chats with Lera, he was completely different: playful, joking, sending voice messages and photos.

Marina could have thrown a scene, packed her things, and gone to stay with their son. But she decided to do something else.Andrej’s company was hosting a holiday dinner soon, and spouses were invited.
Marina had never attended such events before—she didn’t like noisy restaurants or crowds of strangers. Yet one morning, she said calmly:“I’m coming with you to the dinner.”Andrej raised his eyebrows.“To the dinner?”
“You said spouses were welcome.”“You’ll be bored there.”“That’s fine.”Something in her voice stopped him. He didn’t argue. He just shrugged and continued eating, though he glanced at her several times, as if trying to figure out what was going on.
Marina prepared herself. She didn’t intend to cause a scene—she only wanted to appear in a way that Andrej would finally see who she truly was. She picked a dress she hadn’t worn in years, which fit her even better than she remembered.
She styled her hair carefully and wore the earrings she had bought on a trip years ago. When she looked in the mirror, a confident, calm, poised woman stared back at her—a woman she had almost forgotten existed.
The restaurant was vast and noisy. Chandeliers sparkled overhead, waiters moved quickly between tables, and guests laughed, raising their glasses.Andrej guided Marina to the table but kept a slight distance, as if wary of unnecessary attention.
Marina noticed Lera almost immediately: a young, striking woman in a red dress, laughing loudly, occasionally glancing at Andrej.Andrej noticed too. Marina just watched.
The host announced a couples’ quiz: simple questions about each other. At first, it seemed fun. But when Andrej was asked about Marina, it became awkward. He didn’t know her favorite movie, got her favorite color wrong, and hesitated when asked about her hobbies.

Marina sat calmly, silent. The room occasionally chuckled, but without malice—simply because the situation was oddly amusing. When the question about Marina’s favorite book came up, Andrej mumbled the first title that came to mind. Marina only shook her head slightly.
After the quiz, the host asked the women to propose a toast to their husbands. A few guests offered warm words, and then it was Marina’s turn. She stood slowly, raised her glass, and scanned the room. Everyone fell silent. Even Andrej, who suddenly realized the magnitude of his mistake.
“My husband is a very busy man,” she said calmly. “Over the past year, he has never asked me what I do.”Andrej snapped his head toward her.
“Marina, sit down,” he whispered, gripping her hand.
She looked at his fingers, then raised her eyes.“It’s fine,” she said softly. Andrej slowly released her hand.“He doesn’t know which flowers I love, or that our son recently changed jobs. But he knows exactly which dress looks best on his colleague Lera.”
A hush fell over the room. Lera set down her glass, her smile fading. Andrej sat motionless, clutching his napkin.Marina took a small sip of wine and finished with quiet strength:“So let us toast to women who see everything and understand everything, even when they pretend not to notice.”
She sat down. For a few seconds, no one spoke, then someone started clapping. The applause grew louder, spreading across the room.Lera didn’t lift her eyes. Andrej, however, looked at Marina in a way he hadn’t in years—as if he was only now seeing the woman who had stood beside him all along.
