“My gift ended up in the trash? Then you can forget about the trips I paid for too,” the daughter-in-law said calmly.

– My anniversary gift ended up in the trash? Then you can forget about the trip too, – the woman said calmly. 😳😳😲

– Tanya, you’re choosing a gift again as if you were preparing something for a royal family, – Igor laughed as he looked over his wife’s shoulder at the online catalog of the artisan workshop.

Tatyana did not take her eyes off the screen. She zoomed in on the photograph of the porcelain cup and carefully examined the thin gold line running around its rim before answering.

– Your mother looked at a set just like this two years ago. She showed me something similar and said that one day she would buy it.

– She said that, and then forgot about it.

– I didn’t forget.

Igor sat down beside her and flipped through the photographs. The set included six cups with saucers, a coffee pot, a milk jug, and a sugar bowl. Everything was handmade in a small workshop and made to order. The color was not quite white, but it was not cream either – it was a warm, soft shade, as though a little melted milk had been mixed into it. The rim was decorated with delicate, hand-painted branches.

– It’s beautiful, – Igor admitted. – But my parents use their everyday cups even on special occasions.

– It’s their fiftieth wedding anniversary. An ordinary gift can be bought for a birthday.

Tatyana closed the catalog and wrote down the workshop’s contact details.

She had already made her decision.

As an interior designer, she had been working for years. She did not simply enjoy putting furniture and materials together. She noticed how people moved around their homes, what they reached for first thing in the morning, where they put their keys, and which lamp they switched on in the evening.

She believed that a good interior did not begin with a beautiful picture. It began with understanding the habits of the people who lived there.

She was the same way with gifts.

Tatyana never bought an expensive item simply because it cost a lot. Once, she ordered her sister a comfortable armchair for her workshop because she knew her sister spent hours making ceramics. She found her father a lightweight folding workbench that would fit into his small garage. She bought a high-quality suitcase for a friend after the handle on her old suitcase broke twice during previous trips.

She paid attention.

She remembered things people mentioned in passing.

And when the occasion came, she chose exactly what the other person truly needed.

At first, Igor had been surprised by this. Later, he simply accepted it as normal that his wife might open a separate note on her phone months before a celebration and write down something someone had casually mentioned liking.

They had met six years earlier at the opening of a restaurant in the countryside. Tatyana had designed the restaurant’s interior, while Igor was the representative of the company that installed its ventilation system.

During the final inspection, they noticed a strange humming sound in one of the rooms. Igor stayed behind to find the problem.

Tatyana did not go home either.

She checked the lighting, spoke with the contractors, reviewed documents, and occasionally walked past Igor with a measuring tape in her hand.

Late that evening, Igor finally spoke.

– Let’s take a little break. The tables are already inside, the kitchen is working, and there are no guests yet. It’s a rare opportunity to sit down in a restaurant without a reservation.

Tatyana laughed and agreed.

A few months later, they moved in together in Tatyana’s apartment. A year later, they got married. They did not have a big wedding. There were only their parents, close friends, and a dinner – in the same restaurant where they had first met.

Igor’s parents, Valentina Nikolayevna and Boris Andreyevich, received their daughter-in-law politely.

They did not try to talk their son out of marrying her, but Tatyana did not feel the warmth she had expected from them either.

Valentina Nikolayevna was always polite. She asked about Tatyana’s work and occasionally complimented her clothes, but there was always a certain distance behind her words.

Boris Andreyevich was a simpler man. He liked talking about fishing, old cars, and the neighbors at their holiday community. Tatyana liked him, but when it came to family decisions, he usually left them to his wife.

After the wedding, Tatyana tried to become closer to them.

When Boris complained about his back, she helped him choose a comfortable armchair. She ordered Valentina a high-quality table lamp for her needlework. Several times, she paid for grocery deliveries when the elderly couple was ill.

They always accepted her help.

But they rarely thanked her for it.

Valentina Nikolayevna believed that it was simply the younger family members’ natural duty to take care of the older ones.

Whenever Tatyana brought something useful, her mother-in-law would merely nod and immediately change the subject.

Once, Tatyana spent months searching for a rare, expensive type of yarn for Valentina.

When she gave it to her, the woman opened the package, ran her fingers over the yarn, and simply said:

– You should have bought a slightly darker shade.

Tatyana said nothing.

She only looked at Igor.

The man pretended that something on his phone was extremely important.

Later, in the car, he tried to defend his mother.

– She didn’t mean to hurt you. That’s just how she is.

– Gratitude could be part of her nature too, – Tatyana replied.

Igor promised he would talk to his mother.

He never did.

As their fiftieth wedding anniversary approached, Igor himself suggested that they should buy something substantial.

– Fifty years is a big deal. Maybe a new television?

– They already have a good one.

– Then a refrigerator?

– The old one works. And Dad doesn’t want to replace it because he’s used to the shelves.

Igor looked at her.

– How do you know that?

– He told me last winter.

Igor smiled.

– You know more about my parents than I do.

That was when Tatyana remembered the porcelain set.

Two years earlier, she had been with Valentina in a housewares store. Igor had been helping his father choose some tools.

Valentina had spent a long time looking at a handmade coffee set.

– Beautiful, – she had said. – I’d only bring something like this out on special occasions. But it’s too expensive. I’d feel guilty spending that much money on it.

Tatyana remembered.

And she did not forget.

At the beginning of May, she placed the order.

The workshop said it would take almost three months. She personally discussed every detail: the shape of the cups, the pattern, even the inscription that would go inside the box.

“Fifty years together.”

That was what she asked them to write.

But she did not stop with the porcelain set.

Boris Andreyevich had been saying for a long time that he would like to spend some time at a health resort where he could walk, swim, relax, and not have to cook every day.

Tatyana researched the options.

She called several places. She asked what kind of rooms they had, what meals were included, what treatments they offered, and how far it was from the building to the park.

Eventually, she found a suitable place in the neighboring region.

An indoor swimming pool, wooded grounds, comfortable walking paths, an elevator in the building, and a double room.

One week in early September.

Tatyana made the reservation in her own name and paid for it herself.

According to the contract, the trip could be canceled up to a certain date. The service provider would only retain a small processing fee.

Tatyana printed the documents, put them in a thick envelope, and decided to give them to the couple after the celebration.

She told Igor about it a week before the anniversary.

– You even paid for a trip?

– I want them to have a chance to rest.

Igor smiled.

– Mom will love it.

Tatyana smiled back.

– I hope so.

Everyone celebrated on the evening of the anniversary.

The terrace doors were open, the smell of pine drifted in from the garden, guests looked through old photographs, and one after another they congratulated the couple.

Tatyana and Igor arrived early.

The porcelain set was in a large, branded box.

Igor carried it with both hands.

– Be careful! – Tatyana warned.

– I’m carrying it as if there’s a crown inside.

– In a way, there is.

They presented the package after the first round of congratulations.

Valentina removed the wrapping paper, opened the box, and for a few seconds her face lit up.

– Is it handmade?

– Yes. I remembered that you showed me something similar a long time ago. I thought I’d have it made for your fiftieth anniversary.

Valentina ran her finger along the rim of one of the cups.

– It’s rather light.

Tatyana swallowed her disappointment.

– The workshop recommended this shade. The pattern was painted by hand.

– I see.

Valentina closed the box again.

– Take it over there, – she told one of the servers.

The box was simply placed in another room with the rest of the gifts.

Boris Andreyevich shook Tatyana’s hand.

– Thank you. It was a lovely idea.

Those few words were enough to keep Tatyana from feeling that all her effort had been completely pointless.

However, the envelope containing the travel documents was still in her bag.

She did not want to hand it over during the crowded celebration.

The next morning, Igor went to work.

Tatyana decided to visit her in-laws.

She called them first.

– I’m bringing one more gift. Will you be home?

– Come over, – Valentina replied. – Just don’t stay long. Everything is still a mess after the celebration.

Tatyana bought a bouquet of flowers and arrived an hour later.

Valentina opened the door.

– Come in. Boris went to the store.

Tatyana took off her shoes and went into the kitchen.

She handed the flowers to her mother-in-law, then put her bag on a chair.

Valentina went to look for a vase.

And Tatyana noticed the trash can under the sink.

She opened it to throw away the paper wrapping from the flowers.

Then she froze.

Large, bright pieces of porcelain lay on top of the trash.

A golden stripe.

A cup handle.

One side of the sugar bowl.

Broken pieces of the coffee pot.

Tatyana slowly crouched down.

The anniversary card she had included with the gift was lying in the trash too.

And she found the box beside the terrace door.

Torn apart.

Folded up.

The inner dividers were in the trash as well.

The set had not been dropped.

It had not broken by accident.

It had not been put away.

Someone had deliberately smashed it and thrown it away.

Valentina returned with the vase.

When she saw the open trash can, she frowned.

– What are you looking for in there?

Tatyana stood up.

– What happened to the set?

Valentina looked at the trash.

– Nothing. I threw it away.

– It was intact.

– I broke it so it wouldn’t take up space.

For several seconds, Tatyana simply stared at her.

– Why?

– I didn’t like it.

– You were the one who showed me something similar two years ago.

– Oh, come on. People look at all sorts of things in stores.

– You said you wanted something like this one day.

– I don’t remember.

Tatyana pointed at the trash.

– You could have said you didn’t want it. You could have returned it. You could have given it to someone else. But why did you have to smash it?

Valentina shrugged.

– I wouldn’t have used it.

– It was handmade. I spent months choosing everything.

– Don’t make a tragedy out of a few cups. You have plenty of money anyway.

That was the sentence after which Tatyana stopped trying to understand.

She understood.

The problem was not the color of the cups.

Not their size.

Not the fact that they did not fit in the cupboard.

Her mother-in-law simply assumed that Tatyana would keep giving.

Keep paying.

Keep helping.

And keep putting up with it.

Tatyana closed the trash can.

Then she took the white envelope out of her bag.

Valentina immediately noticed it.

– What is that?

Tatyana looked at her.

– Another gift.

– What is it?

– A week away for the two of you. A health resort. Your own room, full board, treatments. At the beginning of September.

Valentina’s face immediately brightened.

– Give it to me!

Tatyana did not move.

– I thought you’d be happy, – Valentina added.

– You’ll be happy about what I’m going to tell you now.

– What?

Tatyana put the envelope back into her bag.

– My gift ended up in the trash. Then you can forget about the health resort too.

Valentina blinked in disbelief.

Then she laughed.

– Don’t be ridiculous! You’re not canceling an entire trip over a few cups.

– Yes, I am.

– You already paid for it.

– With my money.

– Igor won’t allow this.

Tatyana took out her phone.

– Igor didn’t pay for the reservation.

She opened the confirmation email.

The reservation was in her name.

She called the health resort.

– Good afternoon. I’d like to cancel my reservation.

Valentina watched her in disbelief.

The employee on the other end checked the details and explained that according to the contract, a small processing fee would be deducted and the rest of the money would be refunded.

– All right, – Tatyana said. – I accept that.

– Tanya, don’t do this! – Valentina snapped. – I only said I didn’t like the set!

Tatyana covered the phone’s microphone for a moment.

– And I’m saying that I no longer want to pay for your vacation.

Then she continued the conversation.

A few minutes later, the email arrived.

The reservation had been canceled.

Tatyana put her phone away.

Valentina’s face darkened.

– You ruined our anniversary gift over a lousy set!

– I didn’t ruin it. You broke the set. Then I decided not to pay for the trip.

– Boris has nothing to do with this!

– The reservation was for both of you. And he didn’t even know it existed.

– Igor will talk to you.

– Let him.

Tatyana picked up her bag.

– You don’t need the documents anymore.

– Wait! Let’s talk about this!

– We already have.

– Igor will know how you behaved!

Tatyana turned around.

– I’ll tell him myself.

And she walked out the door.

She sat motionless in the car for several minutes.

She did not cry.

She simply stared at the steering wheel.

She thought about the porcelain craftsman who had spent months working on the set. She remembered how he had sent her different patterns. How she had asked him not to make the gold line too thick. How they had chosen the shade together.

And now all of it lay in a trash can as sharp pieces of broken porcelain.

Tatyana opened her banking app.

She checked the reservation details.

Then she saved the cancellation confirmation.

Only after that did she call Igor.

– Can you talk?

– Of course. What happened?

– I went to your parents’ house to give them the travel documents.

– Was Mom happy about the trip?

– The trip is no longer relevant.

Silence.

– What do you mean?

– Your mother broke the set and threw it away.

– What?

– I saw it in the trash.

– Maybe it was an accident…

– No. She told me she deliberately broke it because the box was too big.

Igor fell silent.

– I’ll call her.

– Call her.

Twenty minutes later, Igor called again.

– Mom says she didn’t like the color.

– She told me the same thing.

– Tanya… Mom really shouldn’t have done that.

– No.

– But why did that mean you had to cancel the trip?

Tatyana closed her eyes.

– Because it isn’t about the porcelain, Igor.

– Then what is it about?

– It’s about the fact that I spent months preparing something for them, and they treated it as worthless trash in a single day.

– Dad didn’t do anything.

– I’m not punishing him. The reservation was for both of them, and he didn’t even know about it.

– Please reinstate it.

– Why should I?

Igor had no answer.

– Why do I have to pay again for people who didn’t even try to respect what they were given?

– Because it was their anniversary.

– An anniversary does not give anyone the right to humiliate the person giving them a gift.

There was silence.

– I’ll be home tonight, – Igor finally said.

When Igor told his father what had happened, Boris Andreyevich stared ahead for a long time.

– What trip are you talking about?

– Tatyana booked us a week at a health resort.

– And?

– She canceled it.

– Why?

Igor looked at his mother.

– Mom broke the porcelain set.

Boris Andreyevich slowly stood up.

He opened the cabinet under the sink.

He saw the broken cups.

He picked up the anniversary card.

– You did this?

Valentina shrugged.

– We didn’t need it.

– And that’s why you had to smash it?

– I didn’t need it.

– But you accepted it.

Valentina said nothing.

– And the trip?

– She canceled that too.

– She did the right thing.

– You’re taking her side too?

– I’m not taking sides against you. I’m trying to make you understand what you did.

– It was just a set.

Boris Andreyevich gave her a bitter smile.

– No. It was someone’s work, attention, and love.

That day, Boris Andreyevich called Tatyana.

– I know what happened. I didn’t know about the trip, and I didn’t know that Valentina had broken the set.

– I understand.

– I’m sorry.

Tatyana was silent for a moment.

– Thank you for calling.

– I’m sorry about the trip, but I don’t blame you.

– I don’t want you to be put in an uncomfortable position because of this.

– I’ve lived with this woman for fifty years. I know when she goes too far.

Somehow, those words meant more to Tatyana than all the excuses ever had.

Over the following months, something changed.

Tatyana did not cut off contact.

She did not forbid anything.

She did not create scenes.

She simply stopped trying so hard

She no longer spent months searching for special gifts for Valentina.

She no longer organized trips.

She no longer wrote down every passing comment.

She brought flowers.

Sometimes chocolate.

An occasional small gift.

That was all.

Igor noticed at first.

– You used to spend much more time thinking about Mom’s gifts.

– I used to think it mattered.

– And now?

– Now I know that thoughtfulness doesn’t have to become self-sacrifice.

Igor did not argue.

But Valentina noticed too.

Once, she mentioned an expensive kitchen appliance an acquaintance had bought.

Another time, she talked about an expensive handbag.

Then she mentioned a wellness hotel.

Tatyana listened to everything.

But she did not react.

Eventually, Valentina could not stand it anymore.

– You used to remember much better what I liked.

Tatyana looked at her.

– I still remember.

– Then why don’t you do anything about it?

– Because your wishes no longer belong on my shopping list.

Valentina’s face turned red.

– How long are you going to keep bringing up that cursed set?

– I’m not bringing it up.

– Then what are you doing?

– I learned from it.

The sincere apology came only months later.

One afternoon, Tatyana came to pick up Igor, who had been helping his father in the garage.

Valentina walked them to the door.

They were almost outside when the older woman spoke.

– About the set… you were right.

Tatyana looked at her.

– I shouldn’t have broken it.

– No.

– I should have told you I didn’t like it. Or I should have returned it.

– Yes.

Valentina lowered her eyes.

– Did you spend a lot of time on it?

– Months.

Her mother-in-law slowly nodded.

– I didn’t think about it.

– That was exactly the problem.

Valentina sighed deeply.

– I’m sorry.

Tatyana accepted the apology.

But the old trust did not return.

And perhaps it did not have to.

Because Tatyana finally understood:

You don’t have to end every relationship in order to set a boundary.

Sometimes it is enough to stop constantly proving your love to someone who considers it a natural obligation.

The pieces of the porcelain set had long since disappeared from the trash.

The box was gone too.

The anniversary card had been lost.

But that day left a mark on all of them.

Igor realized that his mother took other people’s efforts far too lightly.

Boris Andreyevich understood that silence does not always preserve peace.

And Valentina Nikolayevna only realized too late that she had not merely lost a few cups.

She had lost the daughter-in-law who had once spent months thinking about how to make her happy.

Because the value of a gift is not determined by its price.

It is determined by the thought behind it.

And when someone thoughtlessly throws such a gift into the trash, they may not be breaking porcelain.

They may be breaking a relationship.
