Brothers by Choice. In a quiet neighborhood, two boys were known for never being apart. Their names were Elian and MatteoFrom the age of five to eight, they spent almost every day together—running through dusty streets,
playing hide-and-seek between old houses, and chasing dragonflies in the nearby fields.Elian was the son of a humble mechanic, while Matteo lived with relatives because his mother worked abroad. Their lives were different, but to them it didn’t matter.
To everyone around them, they seemed less like friends and more like brothers. But one day everything changed.
Matteo’s mother returned and told him he would finally live with her in another country. On the day he left, the two boys hugged tightly in the middle of the street, both crying.
“I’ll come back, bro,” Matteo promised. At the time, they thought it would only be for a short while. But five years passed.

When Matteo returned at thirteen, he had changed. He was taller, confident, and dressed neatly after years of living abroad. As his mother’s car stopped in their old neighborhood, he looked around, searching for familiar memories.
Then he noticed a thin boy sitting near a small roadside shop. His clothes were worn, his sandals muddy. For a moment Matteo didn’t recognize him.
Then the boy looked up.Their eyes met.“…Elian?” Matteo whispered.Elian stood slowly, disbelief on his face.“Matteo?”But this wasn’t the same boy Matteo remembered. The cheerful child he once knew now looked tired and older than his age.
As they spoke, Matteo noticed Elian’s broken belt tied together with plastic.Elian lowered his head“Sorry,” he said quietly.“This is our life now.”They walked to the old tree where they used to sit as children. There, Elian finally explained what had happened.
Two years earlier, his father had fallen seriously ill and could no longer work as a mechanic. Since then, Elian had been helping his family however he could—selling small items, caring for chickens, and collecting scrap to earn money.
“It’s hard,” he admitted, “but we keep going.”Matteo felt tears in his eyes“Why didn’t you ask for help?” he asked.Elian smiled softly.“I didn’t want to be a burden.”
Matteo’s mother had followed them and overheard their conversation. Her eyes filled with tears.“Elian,” she said gently, “you’re family to us.”
That evening, Elian stayed for dinner. For the first time in a long while, he ate until he was completely full. The next day Matteo insisted on visiting Elian’s home.
The house was small and damaged, with holes in the roof and cracked walls.Elian’s mother apologized shyly. But Matteo shook his head.“I’m not here to judge,” he said. “I’m here because I love my friend.”

In the following weeks, Matteo and his family quietly helped. They repaired the house, bought a used motorcycle so Elian’s father could work again, and helped Elian’s mother open a small neighborhood shop.
Slowly, life began to improve. One afternoon, the boys sat again under their old tree.“Why are you doing all this for me?” Elian asked.Matteo smiled.
“Because when I left this neighborhood,” he said, “you were the one who made it feel like home.”Months passed, and little by little Elian became stronger and happier. Eventually, he returned to school.
One day, Matteo saw something he hadn’t seen in years.Elian’s old smile. As they walked home together one evening, Elian spoke quietly.“No matter what happens, I’ll never abandon you.”
Matteo laughed and patted his shoulder.“This time,” he said, “I’m not the one leaving.”Under the same sun that once watched them play as children, the two boys stood side by side again—no longer just childhood friends, but brothers by heart.
Because true friendship isn’t defeated by time…and it certainly isn’t defeated by money. If anything, it only grows stronger.
