“Tobias Moretti Then and Now – The Beloved Inspector Moser Like You’ve Never Seen Him Before!”

Tobias Moretti – From Mountain Boy to Screen Legend, and Back to His Roots

Tobias Moretti, born Villben, grew up in a picturesque mountain village in Tyrol, where the rhythm of rural life, the closeness to nature, and the values of hard work shaped his early years. This deep connection to the land didn’t fade with time—it grew stronger.

Today, he passionately tends his own farm in Omesberg, where he raises organic cattle—not just as a hobby, but out of deep conviction and respect for nature and living beings.

His artistic path began with music. A gifted child, he played multiple instruments from an early age. His initial passion led him to the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. Yet, his creative spirit eventually found a different outlet: acting.

In 1984, he began studying drama at the prestigious Otto Falckenberg School in Munich, where he refined the skills that would later captivate both stage and screen audiences.

Moretti first gained recognition as a theater actor, impressing critics with his intense and charismatic performances. But it wasn’t long before he found his way to the silver screen. He caught the attention of a

wider audience through films like Workaholic (Who’ll Sleep in My Bed?) and the classic Krambambuli. Still, it was the crime drama Inspector Rex that launched him to international fame.

As Inspector Richard Moser, the sharp, charismatic detective with a loyal dog by his side, Moretti became a household name. His portrayal resonated deeply with viewers, and his performance earned him accolades,

including the Bavarian Film Award in 1995 and Italy’s Telegatto Award in 1998.

Yet, at the height of the show’s success, Moretti made a surprising decision: after four seasons, he chose to walk away from *Rex*. His departure shocked fans, especially when the writers were forced to “kill off” his beloved character.

Later, he explained his decision with characteristic clarity: “I truly enjoyed it for a long time, but being a TV star isn’t a real profession. My face is not for sale.”

Today, in his mid-sixties, Moretti lives far from the spotlight with his family on his farm in the Tyrolean mountains. Surrounded by cows, forests, and peace, he’s returned to his roots.

Those who only knew him as the dashing detective might be surprised to learn he now finds more satisfaction mucking out a barn at dawn than posing on a red carpet.

This is the transformation: the man who once dominated the screen now lives in harmony with the land—but in both roles, he brings the same depth, authenticity, and passion.
