A recent viral TikTok video showing playful police dogs at an airport sparked curiosity and admiration from viewers. One user asked how the dogs still had so much energy after long hours on duty. The original poster responded humorously:
“Two possibilities: they’re using the ‘material’ they seized or they’re simply Labradors.”
While the comment was made in jest, there’s truth in the idea that Labradors are naturally energetic. According to the National Police Dog Foundation, Labrador Retrievers are one of the breeds commonly used in police work,
particularly for narcotics and explosives detection, evidence recovery, and search and rescue missions. Though breeds like German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, and Dutch Shepherds are the primary choices for most K9 units due to their strength and intelligence,
Labradors are frequently chosen for scent-based tasks thanks to their gentle nature and exceptional noses.
These dogs’ incredible sense of smell allows them to detect even trace amounts of substances. Dr. Ann Hohenhaus, a veterinarian at New York City’s Animal Medical Center, explains that dogs have 60 times more smell receptors

than humans and devote 40 times more brain power to processing scents. This gives them the ability to distinguish between 30,000 and 100,000 different smells. Their talent isn’t just useful for detecting drugs or explosives
—studies have shown they can also smell stress, illness, and even conditions like cancer and seizures.
The U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) heavily relies on these canine teams as part of its airport security strategy. The dogs work by sniffing the air around passengers and luggage, looking for the faintest trace of explosives.
In May, the TSA introduced a new explosives detection team at Richmond International Airport, featuring Hary, a 5-year-old German Shepherd trained specifically for this task. The TSA emphasizes that canines are a vital line of defense
against potential threats and that they undergo regular testing to maintain top-level effectiveness.
In the viral TikTok clip, the camera zooms in on a man resting in a seating area of the airport. The poster later shared that the K9 dogs “woke me up” while he was napping. In a follow-up comment, he clarified the dogs were likely at the end of their shift,
not on a formal break—just enjoying a well-earned moment of freedom.
The comment section was flooded with praise for the hardworking pups. One user wrote, “They deserved it,” while another said, “This made my heart melt.” Someone else commented, “They were like: FREEDOM.”
Others noted how these dogs work harder than most people and deserve the chance to play. Whether it’s on patrol, sniffing out danger, or simply enjoying a break, these loyal K9 officers continue to impress the public not just with their skills, but with their heart and enthusiasm.
